An overturned vehicle on the M25 motorway in Surrey caused severe commuter delays on Tuesday, June 2, leading to a 17-mile traffic jam.

The incident occurred during rush hour on the clockwise carriageway near Leatherhead, before Junction 9.

Emergency officials blocked multiple lanes, holding all traffic for approximately 20 minutes starting at 7:35 a. m.

, according to National Highways and traffic monitoring site Inrix.

National Highways reported two-hour delays on the clockwise carriageway, with congestion stretching from Junction 9 back to Junction 5 at Sevenoaks.

The disruption also affected surrounding routes, including the M23 and A3.

Recovery Operations

Recovery operations required the closure of two out of four lanes between Junction 8 at Redhill and Junction 9.

Lanes three and four remained obstructed while crews worked at the scene.

At 8:30 a. m.

, Inrix stated: "Severe delays and two lanes closed due to recovery work and earlier overturned vehicle on M25 clockwise before J9 A243 (Leatherhead).

Congestion to Clacket Lane Services, halfway back to J5 M26 (17 miles). Still in lanes three and four (of four) after a 20 minute hold at 07:35."

The exact number of vehicles involved in the collision and the status of any potential injuries remain unconfirmed as emergency services review the incident.
