Hugh Jackman is set to star as the pirate Long John Silver in a new film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island, directed by Ridley Scott.
The project marks the first professional collaboration between Jackman and Scott, according to a report from Deadline.

Screenwriter Jack Thorne is writing and executive-producing the movie, while Scott and Michael Pruss are producing through Scott Free Productions.
Major film studios are expected to compete for the distribution rights, as the production currently has no distribution home.
The project was initially pitched to 20th Century Studios, but the studio declined due to its focus on an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film.
The adaptation is described as a modern reimagining of the 1883 adventure story.
According to Deadline, the narrative follows a young boy who discovers a legendary treasure map and embarks on a perilous sea voyage to claim the hidden fortune.

Scott's upcoming feature is part of a busy directorial schedule. His latest venture, The Dog Stars, released its first trailer this week.
His previous directorial projects include Gladiator 2 and Napoleon.
Stevenson's literary work has seen numerous adaptations across film, television, theatre, and video games since its original publication.
The last major cinematic adaptation was the 2002 animated film Treasure Planet, and a television series starring Hayley Atwell is also in development.
