Actor Patrick Wilson is drawing on his extensive horror film background to keep the atmosphere light on the set of the Apple TV+ psychological thriller series "Cape Fear."

The series follows an exonerated convict, played by Javier Bardem, who manipulates attorneys Tom and Anna Bowden, portrayed by Wilson and Amy Adams.

Despite the intense on-screen narrative, the cast deliberately drops the tension between takes to maintain focus during filming.

Wilson credits this specific on-set approach to lessons learned during his time working on "The Conjuring" and "Insidious" franchises.

"We screw around a lot ... I think that ends up just being the balance.

Maybe that's just how we're used to working, but we had a lot of fun for sure," Wilson said.

The actor explained that fostering a loose environment off-camera helps the cast manage the psychological weight demanded by showrunner Nick Antosca when the cameras roll.

"When you got to dive in and really go for it, it's definitely very heavy and weighted and the stakes are high, but I don't know how you would operate on that kind of level throughout an entire workday.

That would be really exhausting," Wilson said.

"I think being able to turn it off and try to shake it off and run around and joke about something else or sing musical theater songs or something ...

I mean, I think that's important. So there was a lot of that," he added.
