Details of the Incident

Louisiana State Police stated that the incident began when troopers responded to reports of a Toyota being driven recklessly, striking a concrete barrier, and suffering a tire blowout.

The vehicle eventually stopped on I-310 in adjacent St. Charles Parish, where the suspect fled on foot from an elevated section of the interstate into the swamp below.

Troopers and deputies with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office began searching for the suspect, identified in local media reports as Victor Rivas of Montz.

Rivas was later spotted walking along US Highway 61. When law enforcement approached, he fled again into a swampy area, where the reptile struck.

Despite his injuries, Rivas continued fleeing before being located and apprehended with the assistance of drone technology.

Rivas was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and was subsequently released into police custody.

Louisiana State Police public information officer Kyle Wagner said, "Even after the strike, Rivas continued to evade law enforcement and fled again."

Authorities utilized specialized aerial equipment to monitor the woodline until the suspect emerged from the dense vegetation.

"We had to wait for him to pop out the woodline to make that apprehension," Wagner said.

Rivas faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired and resisting an officer.
