A vehicular collision on the northbound M66 motorway near Simister Island triggered severe traffic congestion and temporary road closures on Monday morning, June 1, 2026.

The incident impacted commuters traveling from the M60 motorway, with authorities temporarily holding all vehicles on the northbound carriageway between junction 4 at the M60 intersection and junction 3 at Pilsworth Road in Hollins.

According to the Inrix traffic monitoring service, the road closure began during the morning rush hour as emergency services responded to the scene.

"All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M66 Northbound from J4 M60 J18 (Simister Island) to J3 Pilsworth Road (Hollins).

All traffic stopped at around 08:45," an official post from Inrix stated.

The standstill caused extensive tailbacks that gridlocked surrounding networks, heavily affecting drivers trying to transition from the M60 onto the M66.

Major congestion built up throughout the Prestwich and Whitefield areas, with clockwise queues on the M60 stretching backward past junction 17 and tailing back toward junction 16 at Clifton.

Additional delays surfaced on the anticlockwise M60 carriageway near Heaton Park as motorists approached the Simister Island junction.
