British actor Tom Holland has expressed his desire to help transition the Spider-Man role to a new performer as his upcoming franchise installment approaches its theatrical release.

The 29-year-old actor has portrayed the superhero character for a decade since his initial appearance in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War.

"For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," Holland told Empire.

He explained his vision of passing the character torch by drawing a parallel to how his own entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was facilitated by a veteran co-star.

"Whatever that looks like, I don’t know.

But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset," he added.

Robert Downey Jr. previously brought Holland into the film universe as Tony Stark before the character died in the 2019 movie Avengers: Endgame.

Holland subsequently headlined three standalone movies, with Spider-Man: Homecoming earning $880 million worldwide in 2017, while Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $1.1 billion and $1.9 billion, respectively.

He became the first performer to headline four solo Spider-Man films with the upcoming movie Brand New Day, which features Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Sadie Sink.

Holland's Script Input and Reshoots

"My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty.’ What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?"

Holland said regarding his involvement in the script development.

The studio rejected the specific tagline but utilized the core concept for the narrative, which takes place five years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

"’Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio — which was immediately shot down.

But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now," he stated.

Production for the film included additional photography to integrate extra comedic elements and alter a narrative arc involving an antagonist.

"I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need," Holland told GQ regarding the reshoots.

He noted that the baseline film was already functioning well prior to the production of the extra footage.

"The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas.

We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff," he stated.
