Emergency crews safely extracted eight Houston ISD students from a stalled roller coaster on May 28, 2026, after a mechanical failure trapped them mid-air at Galveston's Pleasure Pier.
First responders used a tower truck to reach the riders on the Iron Shark roller coaster, securing each individual in a safety harness before lowering them to the ground.

Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. stated that proactive design planning with the pier allowed emergency vehicles to access the back of the amusement ride efficiently.
According to Varela, emergency personnel extended the tower truck basket to its maximum length of 105 feet to achieve the necessary angle for the operation.
"We felt that was the proper angle, especially the way we had to get one of the patients out and it was just a safety measure on our part," said Varela.
The entire evacuation process lasted approximately four hours, and officials reported that no injuries were sustained by any of the riders.
"I can't say enough words about them tonight.
They are top notch, they did an amazing job, it's a proud moment, proud to be chief here," said Varela.
The fire chief expressed immense gratitude toward the responding crews for completing the challenging operation without incident.

"It took almost four hours to get that happy ending but I promise you, there's a great deal of relief that I have right now especially when I had that last crew member come off that ladder and we can all go back to the station and go home," said Varela.
Houston ISD confirmed that the stranded individuals were students from Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and STEM Academy High School attending a field trip.
"We are grateful that all students, staff, and chaperones are safe. School administration is in direct contact with the families of all students who were on the trip.
We are thankful for the rescue efforts of the first responders and park personnel," the district said.
Pleasure Pier Chief Operating Officer Terry Turney stated that the ride safety mechanisms functioned properly by stopping the roller coaster immediately during its initial climb.
"The ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascent, however, as designed, it immediately stopped to keep everyone safe.
Our focus immediately shifted to the safety of our guests. Therefore, we contacted the Fire Department to assist, ensuring all guests were safely removed from the ride.
