Rudolf K. , known as the "Twente Butcher," targeted three individuals near the university campus between 2000 and 2005.
One victim, a female student cycling on Hengelosestraat, survived a random stabbing.
"I had no idea I was stabbed. I felt nothing.
The hospital was in an uproar when they saw my wound," the anonymous victim recalled in a statement originally published by UT-Nieuws.
After the incident, the student underwent psychological counseling to overcome anxiety and concentration problems.
She then pressured local authorities and university officials to address dark, isolated areas around the campus.
"There are many unsafe places. (...
) And I hope students don't cycle alone anymore," she stated.

In response, the university established a dedicated campus safety committee.
According to regional media outlet U-Today, this committee managed infrastructure repairs, including fixing broken outdoor lights, illuminating dark bus shelters, and securing unlit parking lots.
Heightened Surveillance and Arrest
The knife attacks caused widespread panic among staff and students, prompting increased surveillance. The university security service eventually spotted Rudolf K.
and engaged in a vehicle pursuit with local police after a composite sketch of the suspect was circulated.
According to the Twentsche Courant Tubantia, the connection between Rudolf K.
, the campus stabbings, and the murder of a sleeping man in Enschede's Volkspark was only discovered after his arrest for slaughtering dozens of sheep and horses.
He had previously spent years in a secure psychiatric facility for attempted rape and received a life sentence that was upheld on appeal.
