A 42-year-old man stabbed his ex-wife and their two young daughters to death before taking his own life inside a gated Doral Isles home on Tuesday night, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.

Doral police officers discovered the four unresponsive individuals at approximately 7:44 p. m.

after responding to a welfare check requested by a concerned family friend.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel pronounced all individuals dead at the scene, and authorities confirmed all victims sustained multiple stab wounds.

Victims Identified

Homicide detectives identified the deceased as Ryan Charles Whiten, 42; his ex-wife Melanie Lauren Hyer, 46; and their biological daughters, 11-year-old Savannah Whiten and 8-year-old Sienna Whiten.

Investigators established that Whiten and Hyer were divorced but continued to co-parent their daughters, who attended Downtown Doral Charter Schools.

Doral Mayor Christi Fraga, who knew Hyer personally through the local school community, expressed deep grief over the loss of the family.

"She was a light of sunshine and was always eager to help at school and to be involved as a mom, so when I got the news, it definitely hit close to home," said Fraga.

Fraga noted that Hyer actively organized social gatherings to foster connections among neighborhood parents.

"She's the one that created the chat of all the moms to kind of go have lunches and stuff, and get together and build a community around our kids," added Fraga.

The mayor urged the community to focus on the positive memories of the victims rather than the tragedy.

"We want to remember them by their bubbly personalities, their beautiful smiles and pray for their souls, pray for their families and for everyone that surrounded them that this will impact," added Fraga.

Community in Mourning

Longtime friend Willard Shepard, who initially hired Hyer as his realtor two decades ago, expressed total shock regarding the violent incident.

"Melanie is an extremely outgoing person, extremely friendly, extremely meticulous when it came to her work," said Shepard.

Shepard stated that the loss has devastated those who knew the family.

"It's just heartbreaking across the board that this entire family is physically not with us anymore," said Shepard.

He added that there were no warning signs prior to the killings.

"There was no indication that I had that anything like this would be possible whatsoever on the horizon," said Shepard.

Downtown Doral Charter Schools released an official statement confirming emotional support measures for the campus.

"Our community is mourning the loss of two of our beloved students. Our heartfelt sympathies are with their families, friends, faculty, and staff at our schools.

These students will be deeply missed."

School officials deployed grief counselors and emotional support animals to assist affected students and staff members.

"To support our students and staff, the school has arranged to have grief counselors on campus and will continue to provide support as needed.

We encourage parents to talk openly with their children and closely monitor their well-being. Parents with any concerns or in need of additional support should contact the school."

Local grandmother Gloria Caldas shared her heartbreak over the tragedy.

"I am sad. I am definitely very sad.

It is horrible that the lives of a mother and father ended this way," Caldas said.

Sandra Bermudez, CEO and founder of the South Florida non-profit literacy program The Lucy Project, remembered Hyer as an energetic volunteer.

"She fundraised and brought her energy," said Bermudez.

Bermudez added that Hyer's daughter Savannah participated in the literacy program to manage her dyslexia.

Virginia Talieh, a learning specialist who taught both young sisters, recalled their bright personalities and her upcoming summer plans with them.

"They had a wonderful contagious smile," said Talieh.

Talieh expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the children.

"Sienna was like a little Tasmanian devil, like all around all the places. Savannah was like a ray of sunshine.

No child deserves anything like that," said Talieh.

She mentioned the difficulty of facing her upcoming teaching schedule.

"I'll miss them," added Talieh.

Talieh further explained that she has been unable to remove the sisters from her calendar.

"I'll miss them very much. I haven't been able to delete them from my calendar for next week," added Talieh.

She recalled how much Savannah enjoyed using physical learning tools during lessons.

"She got a 100 percent on that spelling test after discovering the tiles," added Talieh.

Talieh remembered gifting the items to the young student.

"She came back with the tiles and I said, 'You keep them. My present.'"

In response to the tragedy, neighborhood residents announced plans to cancel an upcoming community event to gather in solidarity.
