Azcarate handed down the life sentence against the 41-year-old former IRS law enforcement officer, who was also convicted of a firearms offense and child endangerment.
Prosecutors established that Banfield and the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, orchestrated an elaborate plot to kill Christine Banfield by luring 39-year-old Joseph Ryan to the home via a fetish website to frame him for the crime.
Judge Cites 'Evil' and 'Calculation'
"The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil," Judge Azcarate said.
She noted that the multi-month scheme involved extensive manipulation and deception, disregarding the impact on the couple's young daughter who was inside during the fatal shootings and stabbings.
"It is a harsh sentence, but in this case it is a justified one," she added.
The judge expressed hope that the severity of the crimes would continue to affect the defendant during his life incarceration.
Victim Impact Statements
Danielle Hocker, sister of Christine Banfield, delivered a tearful statement describing the profound grief and altered childhood memories following the loss.
"Since losing her, those same memories have changed. They're no longer just joyful, but layered with grief," Hocker said.
She pledged to remain a constant presence in the life of her niece, Valerie, to ensure she knows her mother's personality and love.
Deirdre Fisher, mother of Joseph Ryan, addressed the court virtually, describing her son as a deeply compassionate individual who advocated for the vulnerable.
"My son's legacy is one of selfless love, while Brendan's is one of senseless evil," Fisher said.

She rejected the characterization of her son during the trial, emphasizing he was a real person with a meaningful existence.
Sangeeta Ryan, Joseph's aunt, stated the family is reclaiming the narrative from the defendant's lies.
"Today we take back Joe and Christine's memory from the lies, from the manipulation, and from the man who thought he could control their story even after taking their lives," she said.
Banfield maintained his innocence in court, criticizing the legal system and asserting that authorities failed to investigate Ryan properly.
"I'm not trying to diminish in any way what [Christine's] life was. She truly was a caring mother, a caring wife, a loving nurse," Banfield said.
"But I am not responsible for her death."
He claimed the prosecution's evidence contradicted the timeline and denied ever holding the kitchen knife used to stab his wife seven times in the neck.
"This is not a knife that I ever held in my hand, and I never stabbed her," he said.
Banfield argued that his extramarital affairs did not diminish his love for his wife, stating their marital arrangement functioned well.
"Our marriage worked for us. It wasn't something that I looked to leave," he said.

The au pair, Peres Magalhães, previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for shooting Ryan under Banfield's direction and received a 10-year prison sentence in February 2026.
