The production secured second place on the domestic box office chart. It outperformed major Hollywood franchises during its theatrical run.

Low Budget, High Returns

Written and directed by 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession was made on a budget of less than $1 million.

Barker previously directed the 2024 found-footage horror film Milk & Serial.

The film challenged major studio releases like Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu. Its success highlights the growing influence of independent horror.

The plot follows Bear, a music store employee played by Michael Johnston.

He uses a supernatural object to force his coworker Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him.

The narrative explores extreme consequences as Nikki becomes dangerously protective and volatile.

The Atlantic reported that the film uses the fear of romantic confrontation to examine contemporary social anxieties among young adults.

Boston, who directed the Netflix series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, commented on similar thematic elements in a separate interview with The New York Times.

Actress Camilla Morrone, who stars in Boston’s series, also noted widespread anxiety about traditional partnerships among her peers.

“Will it feel like death? Will I feel like I’m chained to the bottom of the ocean?”

Morrone asked.

According to Compact Magazine, these anxieties increasingly influence contemporary media and reflect shifting social trends where young adults delay or avoid marriage.
