The Disney and Lucasfilm theatrical relaunch of the Star Wars franchise faltered significantly as the new feature film "The Mandalorian and Grogu" brought in an estimated $10 million or just under during its third weekend of release at the domestic box office on June 7, 2026.
The Jon Favreau-directed film experienced an underwhelming $80 million opening over the long Memorial Day holiday, followed by a cataclysmic 70 percent second-weekend drop to $24.4 million.

The movie faced heavy competition during its third weekend from the horror films "Obsession" and "Backrooms," both of which overperformed historically.
Audiences widely perceived the film as a continuation of a streaming series rather than a theatrical event.
With a production budget of $165 million alongside additional marketing costs, the film reportedly required a global intake of $450 million to $500 million to break even.
It currently sits at just $293 million globally, including a disappointing $155 million total from U. S.
theaters.
The current $155 million domestic haul allowed the movie to surpass the $154 million domestic record of "Mad Max: Fury Road."

Yet it continues to trail the $213 million lifetime domestic haul of "Solo: A Star Wars Story," which cost $275 million to produce.
Review aggregators further marked the film's struggles, noting that the production featured lead actor Pedro Pascal in only a single scene while relying heavily on his body and stunt doubles.
"Bountiful in action but threadbare in narrative thrust with its episodic structure, this Star Wars is more of a skirmish that coasts on the charm of its central dynamic duo," stated the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus, where the film settled at a 62 percent score.
Critics widely described the storyline as a slack combination of narratives originally intended for the unreleased fourth season of the streaming television series.
