An unidentified assailant attacked the son of columnist and publicist Yesim Candan on Tuesday evening in Amsterdam-Zuid, according to local media reports.

The attacker used a chain lock as a weapon, causing injuries to the victim. Following the incident, Candan filed an official police report.

Local law enforcement has launched an investigation into the assault.

A police spokesperson confirmed that authorities are looking into whether the attack is connected to a threatening letter sent to Het Parool last week.

The anonymous letter was directed at Candan concerning one of her published columns. Het Parool received the threat prior to the physical assault.

Mayor Expresses Solidarity

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema addressed the assault on her Instagram account, expressing support for the family.

She stated that Candan advocates for respect and decency in her columns, yet her son was attacked, possibly to silence the mother.

Halsema called the act a grave crime and emphasized that Candan and her son deserve full support and freedom.
