A Royal Navy helicopter crashed into a field at Sourton Down, near Okehampton, on Wednesday morning, June 3, 2026.

Emergency services responded to the scene after reports were received at approximately 4:30 a. m.

Local residents reported hearing loud explosions and seeing a search and rescue helicopter hovering over the area.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the aircraft was a Royal Navy helicopter.

The cause of the crash and the status of any casualties have not yet been confirmed.

Devon and Cornwall Police issued a statement: "Emergency services are at the scene after a crash involving a helicopter in a field at Sourton Down."

Police also announced road closures: "Several road closures are in place around the A386 and A30 Sourton Cross slip and services area."

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported: "A386 Bowerland Road Northbound closed due to police incident from A30 (Sourton Cross, Sourton Down) to A3079 Holsworthy Road (Fowley Cross).

Traffic is coping well."
