The Muscatine Police Department is processing multiple crime scenes and conducting interviews across the city, located about 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids.

Police Chief Anthony Kies said officers found four deceased victims inside a home after receiving an emergency call.

Investigators later tracked McFarland to a local riverfront trail.

"While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life," Kies stated during a news conference.

Following the trail confrontation, officers discovered two additional male victims at separate properties in the city. Both are believed to be related to the gunman.

One man was found dead in his residence, and the other was located inside a local business.

An ABC television affiliate reported that at least two of the victims were children. Official identities and specific details have not been released.

"Today I simply do not have the words," Kies said, expressing grief over the incident's impact on the community.

He described the shootings as "this act of evil."
