Hulu has ordered a three-part true-crime docuseries titled Hunting Whitey Bulger, with Ben Affleck as narrator and executive producer.

The series explores the life and criminal empire of James "Whitey" Bulger, leader of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston.

It includes new investigative reporting, rare handwritten letters from Bulger while imprisoned, and exclusive interviews with key figures.

Affleck and Matt Damon had previously planned a scripted Warner Bros. film on Bulger in 2011, but it did not move forward.

Bulger's story has inspired films like Martin Scorsese's The Departed and the 2015 biopic Black Mass starring Johnny Depp.

Bulger led the Winter Hill Gang from around 1975 to 1995, involved in drug distribution, extortion, and loan-sharking while serving as an FBI informant.

He fled after being tipped off by his FBI handler, evading capture for 16 years until 2011.

He was convicted on 31 federal counts, including 11 murders, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms.

Bulger died in 2018 at age 89 after being beaten by inmates.

The docuseries is directed by Zackary Canepari, known for Flint Town.

Executive producers include Tom Forman, David Metzler, showrunner Claire Read, and authors Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, who wrote the book Hunting Whitey.

Hulu has not announced a release date. The series joins Hulu's true-crime slate with titles like Bloody Boston and The Scream Murder.
