Hyundai is recalling 424,743 vehicles in the United States to address three separate safety defects, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The issues include a software glitch causing unexpected braking, exploding airbag inflators, and faulty suspension components.

Largest Recall: Unexpected Braking

The biggest campaign affects 421,078 vehicles, specifically the 2025 and 2026 Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.

A software defect in the front cameras makes them overly sensitive to forward objects, triggering the collision avoidance system prematurely.

Hyundai began investigating the sensor malfunction early last year after receiving 376 reports.

The unexpected braking has caused four crashes, resulting in four injuries where affected vehicles were rear-ended.

Dealerships will perform a free software update on the front camera. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed on July 17, 2026.

Vehicle Identification Numbers involved became searchable on NHTSA. gov on May 20, 2026.

Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460, referencing recall number 302.

Second Recall: Exploding Airbag Inflators

The second recall covers 3,493 Elantra sedans from the 2015 and 2016 model years with defective airbag inflators made by ARC Automotive.

Federal authorities warned that the component can rupture during deployment and spray metal shrapnel at occupants. The defect involves internal propellant density irregularities that can over-pressurize the inflator.

Hyundai stated it is executing the recall out of an abundance of caution, as no field ruptures have been reported.

Dealerships will inspect and replace the inflators if necessary when owner notifications roll out in July.

Third Recall: Loose Suspension Parts

The third campaign affects 172 electric vehicles, including the 2025 Ioniq 5 and 2026 Ioniq 9.

Hyundai launched an investigation in 2025 after a consumer complaint about strange rear suspension noises.

Improper torque on rear suspension fasteners could cause the hardware to vibrate loose, leading to loss of vehicle control.

The automaker estimates only 1% of the recalled EVs actually contain the improperly torqued parts.

Dealerships will inspect the suspension, replace loose fasteners, and perform a full rear alignment free of charge.
