Glasgow Airport temporarily closed its runway on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after a small aircraft experienced a landing incident and blocked the tarmac.

Emergency crews arrived shortly before 4:00 p. m.

to secure the area, prompting officials to halt all flight operations.

Authorities diverted arriving planes to nearby airports, including Edinburgh, while inbound and outbound flights faced extensive delays as teams worked to clear the runway.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed resources to assist other emergency personnel at the airport terminal following the initial disruption reports.

“We were alerted at 3.48pm on Tuesday, 26 May, to reports of an incident at Glasgow Airport,” said a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters quickly established safety protocols around the affected small aircraft to mitigate any potential hazards on the airfield.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to assist emergency services partners at the scene, and firefighters worked to make the area safe,” the spokesperson added.

The agency later confirmed its presence at the airport through an additional brief release during the ongoing response.

“We did attend an incident at Glasgow Airport,” said a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Witnesses observed the immediate aftermath of the landing issue, noting that the aircraft appeared to suffer mechanical instability before stopping completely.

“Glasgow Airport runway temporarily closed. Small aircraft appeared to dip its wing on the runway and stop.

Air traffic monitoring agencies reported that the blockage caused widespread operational freezes, with schedules impacted well into the evening.

“Glasgow Airport is closed until 18:00 UTC after an aircraft blocked the runway following a landing incident,” wrote flight tracking website AirNav Radar on X.

The organization added that regional authorities were actively working to restore normal flight flows.

“Flights to and from the airport are currently being affected as authorities work to clear the runway and resume normal operations,” AirNav Radar stated.

Passengers aboard inbound flights noted that flight captains provided estimates regarding when the airfield would become operational again.

“Glasgow Airport shut. My flight (BA1488) was diverted to Edinburgh.

Glasgow not expected to reopen for another 2.5 hours - according to the captain of my flight,” said traveller Claire Herriot in a post on X.

The passenger further explained that a disabled aircraft on the main landing strip caused the sudden travel diversions.

“Broken down plane on runway at Glasgow Airport is the reason for the closure. Several flights diverted,” Herriot added.

Commercial carriers, including Loganair and KLM, adjusted their timetables, with several departures delayed past 7:00 p. m.
