Weather officials issued a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory for northern and western New Hampshire on Thursday night, May 21, 2026, as plunging temperatures threatened local agriculture.
High pressure, clearing skies, and dry air caused rapid cooling after sunset, sending temperatures well below seasonal averages.

According to meteorologists, the Freeze Warning affected Coos County and northern Grafton County, where temperatures dropped into the upper 20s and low 30s.
A separate Frost Advisory covered Sullivan and Carroll counties, along with portions of Merrimack, Cheshire, and Grafton counties, bringing widespread frost risks to the Connecticut River Valley.
The sudden cold snap directly threatened regional gardens and agricultural operations that were already underway with spring planting.
In response to the weather alerts, local agricultural workers logged overtime hours to safeguard sensitive vegetation and prevent significant economic losses.

For the strawberry patches, staffers deployed an irrigation system overnight, using running water to protect plants that had already begun to bud.
“We take precautions because we can’t afford to lose that crop.
And if we do lose it, it will be OK, but it would take a hit on the farm for sure,” said Jenny Sprague of Edgewater Farm.
While hardy plants like perennials remained outdoors at the greenhouses, staff members relocated all other sensitive flora under protective cover.
