Actor Suriya arrived at the Chennai residence of veteran director Bharathiraja on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, to pay his final respects.
The legendary filmmaker died at the age of 84 after facing health challenges.

Visuals from the residence showed Suriya offering condolences to the grieving family.
Bharathiraja, born in Theni Allinagaram, directed over 40 films in a career spanning more than four decades. He earned the title 'Iyakkunar Immayam'.
A Pioneer of Rural Tamil Cinema
The six-time National Award winner revolutionized Tamil cinema with his debut film 16 Vayathinile in 1977.
He shot on location rather than using studio sets, bringing realism to the screen.

His films regularly addressed social evils. For instance, Karuthamma highlighted female infanticide, which spurred state legislative action.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay expressed grief on X, praising the director's realistic portrayals of village life.
"Mr. Bharathiraja created several successful films infused with the vibrant essence of rural life, leaving an indelible mark unique to him in the world of Tamil cinema," he wrote.
In his later years, Bharathiraja sustained an active acting career. He appeared in films like Aayutha Ezhuthu, Thiruchitrambalam, and Maharaja.

His final screen performances include the Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum and the unreleased movie Pulavar.
