Veteran Indian filmmaker Bharathiraja, a pioneer of Tamil rural cinema, died at the age of 84 on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in Chennai, India.
He had been battling a severe lung infection and respiratory complications.

The six-time National Film Award winner was admitted to the Critical Care Unit of MGM Healthcare in late December 2025 after experiencing breathlessness.
His family said his health declined following the sudden death of his son, Manoj, in March 2025.
A Life That Changed Tamil Cinema
Born Chinnasamy Periyamaya Thevar in 1941, Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema by moving production out of traditional indoor studios and into authentic village landscapes.
His 1977 directorial debut, "16 Vayadhinile," transformed the industry by depicting ordinary rural lives and launching the careers of actors Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi.

Over his multi-decade career, he directed nearly 40 films across diverse genres, from Westernized psychological thrillers to social exposes on female foeticide and caste discrimination.
In his later years, he transitioned into acting, appearing in popular films such as "Aayutha Ezhuthu" and "Maharaja."
He also founded an international institute to train aspiring filmmakers.

Bharathiraja was honored with the Padma Shri in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Chandraleela, and his daughter, Janani.
