Renowned Tamil film director Bharathiraja died at his residence in Chennai on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the age of 84.

The cause was a prolonged illness involving respiratory complications and age-related ailments.

Known widely as "Iyakkunar Imayam" (Pinnacle among Directors), Bharathiraja reshaped Indian cinema by moving productions from traditional studios to authentic rural settings.

He was also celebrated for his distinctive voice and trademark opening greeting, "Yen Iniya Tamil Makkale."

Career and Contributions

Bharathiraja won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards (South), six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award.

He introduced numerous fresh talents to the regional film industry, often renaming them with names starting with the letter "R."

Among the actors he launched were Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha, Rekha, Karthik, Pandian, Chandrasekar, Napoleon, and Janakaraj.

Condolences Pour In

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited the filmmaker's home to pay respects.

Political leaders and industry figures issued statements mourning the loss.

Pattali Makkal Kakkal leader Anbumani Ramadoss said the history of Tamil cinema cannot be written without mentioning Bharathiraja.

Venugopal and Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also expressed condolences.

Actor Chiranjeevi called Bharathiraja one of India's greatest storytellers, noting his transformation of village life and human emotions into cinematic poetry.

Actor Gautami described his loss as irreplaceable.
