Prominent personalities from the South Indian cinema industry and fans expressed grief and honored the legacy of legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja following his passing on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

The veteran director, renowned for redefining Tamil cinema through his realistic rural storytelling, drew widespread tributes from actors and directors who worked alongside him throughout his decades-long career.

Tributes from Actors

Actor Revathy, who entered the film industry through the director's 1983 movie Mann Vasanai after he noticed her photograph on a magazine cover, was among the first to offer condolences on social media.

"RIP Bharathiraja sir - the reason that I am here as an actor and did the film I did," wrote Revathy on her Instagram account.

The actress subsequently collaborated with the veteran filmmaker on additional projects, including the 1984 film Pudhumai Penn and the 1985 production Oru Kaidhiyin Diary.

Actress Khushbu Sundar, who played the lead role in the director's 1993 cinematic release Captain Magal, also conveyed her deep sorrow regarding the loss of the industry icon.

"Devastated to know that our most beloved, loved and respected Director, the legendary Bharathiraaja avl is no longer with us," shared Khushbu Sundar.

The actress emphasized his immense contribution to cinema, noting that his artistic works served as fundamental benchmarks and an educational foundation for future generations of filmmakers.

"His demise is a gloomy cloud in Tamil cinema. His films have been bench marks and shall continue to be the actual school of film making.

He leaves behind a huge legacy for every cinema lover. He always said let's do a film with me in 2 pigtails.

That shall remain an unfulfilled dream. Will miss you a lot Sir," added Khushbu Sundar.

Legendary comedy actor Goundamani recounted his extensive professional association with the deceased director, which started with the landmark movie 16 Vayathinile and spanned across various later projects like Puthiya Vaarpugal and Kadhal Oviyam.

"Beginning with 16 Vayathinile, I acted in many films directed by Bharathiraja. It was Bharathiraja who gave me my identity through 16 Vayathinile.

He was a towering artist. My heartfelt condolences on his passing," shared Goundamani.

Directors and Other Personalities Pay Respects

Captain Miller director Arun Matheswaran, who cast the veteran filmmaker as an actor in his 2021 directorial debut titled Rocky, described him as an exceptionally fearless and endlessly curious individual who transformed the medium.

"We've lost more than a filmmaker. We've lost a man who lived and breathed cinema.

He didn't just make films, he redefined Tamil cinema, again and again.

A true stalwart, fearless, endlessly curious, and one of the greatest to ever hold a camera," stated Arun Matheswaran.

The director reflected on the profound learning experience of managing the veteran icon on set, noting that the loss felt deeply personal to him.

"I'll carry forever the privilege of directing him in my first film.

Watching him work, you understood what it meant to love cinema more than anything else in the world.

He inspired generations. His films will keep teaching, provoking, and moving us for decades to come.

Rest in peace, sir. Thank you for everything Bharathiraja sir.

I've lost a friend, a mentor and a father," expressed Arun Matheswaran.

Actor Sibi Sathyaraj added his perspective on the director's unique cinematic style, which famously captured the authentic essence of rural Tamil Nadu on the silver screen.

"Extremely saddened to hear about the passing of Bharathiraja sir. Sir, your films were a true textbook on the language of filmmaking.

You brought the soul of rural Tamil Nadu to the screen and changed the course of Tamil cinema forever.

A monumental loss to cinema. Rest in peace, dear sir," noted Sibi Sathyaraj.

The actor's father, Sathyaraj, maintained a long history of working with the director, starring in the 1987 film Vedham Pudhithu and performing alongside him in Kuttram Kuttrame and Valli Mayil.

Actor Sarathkumar highlighted how the master storyteller left an everlasting impact on global film audiences and successive generations of creative artists.

"His visionary storytelling, artistic excellence, and immense contribution to cinema have left an indelible mark on the film industry and in the hearts of millions around the world.

Through his remarkable work, he inspired generations of filmmakers and audiences alike, creating timeless masterpieces that will continue to be celebrated for years to come.
