British actor Sir Idris Elba has argued against altering the traditional character of James Bond, stating the franchise should not become 'woke' to accommodate global audiences.

Speaking to GQ on Monday, June 8, 2026, Elba said certain international film markets would reject a Black protagonist due to cultural preferences.

'In realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that,' said Elba, who has long been rumored for the role.

Escapism Over Politics

The Luther star noted that the original writing of the character serves a specific purpose, though he felt flattered by public speculation.

'Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond.

That's not what they like in their culture. Period,' he said.

Elba emphasized that the franchise's core appeal relies on detachment from real-world political correctness.

'Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke.

I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try to answer the world's taste.

Just be Bond,' he added.

The comments come as Hollywood searches for a new lead actor to replace Daniel Craig, who concluded his tenure as 007 five years ago with No Time To Die.

Meanwhile, the official search for the next James Bond began last month, with casting director Nina Gold leading auditions.

Potential frontrunners include Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner.

Amazon confirmed the ongoing production developments but declined to provide specific timelines for the final casting announcement.

'While we don't plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we're excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right,' the studio said.
