An American tourist faced a 44-euro bill for two gelatos at a central Rome gelateria on Sunday, June 7, 2026, sparking widespread national media coverage and renewed warnings about local tourist traps.

Nicole Ann, a visitor from Florida, published a photograph of the receipt in a prominent Rome travel tips Facebook group to caution future travelers after purchasing the items near Piazza Navona.

The tourist detailed the interaction at the counter, which initially began as an order for basic portions before the server added unsolicited items.

"We asked for two small cups. She gave us the smallest size and said we had three scoops," recounted Nicole Ann.

The server subsequently placed extra toppings, including cannoli and macarons, onto the orders without explaining that these additions carried independent charges.

"We went to pay and it cost €44 for two gelatos," wrote Ann.

She explained that the language barrier contributed to the initial confusion during the transaction.

"It sounded like she said $14, so I didn't even realise until I looked at the receipt," noted Ann.

The final receipt itemized two large maxi cones for 12 euros each, a 4-euro surcharge for whipped cream on both, two pistachio cannolini for 5 euros each, and two macarons for 6 euros.

"Honestly it wasn't even good," said Ann. The Florida resident expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the product, noting she left the dessert unfinished.

"The worst out of all the gelato I had, I couldn't finish it," said Ann.

The post generated hundreds of responses from Italian residents and international tourists debating whether customers must verify price lists beforehand.

"I didn't see prices listed anywhere but after ordering gelatos for a week I assumed it'd be similarly priced," wrote Ann.

She clarified that she possessed prior experience navigating different regions across the Italian coast during her journey.

"Travelled to Naples, Sorrento, Capri and Positano and surprisingly Rome was the only place we kept running into scams lol," added Ann.

Critics note that standard medium gelatos in Rome typically cost between 3 and 5 euros, and local regulations mandate that establishments display their price lists clearly for all patrons.
