A major fire erupted at a Tata Steel processing line in Port Talbot, south Wales, on June 3, 2026.

Emergency services instructed nearby residents to close windows and doors as massive smoke plumes covered the area.

The Mid and West Wales Fire Service and South Wales Police responded to the heavy industrial facility at approximately 20:00 BST.

Officials confirmed that all site staff were evacuated safely.

The company is currently unable to evaluate the extent of structural damage or its effect on production.

The Rapid Relief Team UK deployed volunteers within 90 minutes of the emergency call to assist the intensive overnight containment operation.

Around 100 responders faced an incredibly demanding and hazardous night's work, stated the Rapid Relief Team UK.

The organization provided 125 hot meals throughout the night to support emergency crews battling the flames.

Local resident Kellie Evans witnessed the intense conditions while driving near the industrial site.

She said she couldn't see the flames because the sky was so black, adding that many drivers pulled over to look.

The witness described the scene as very apocalyptic.

Tata Steel issued a statement clarifying that the emergency was completely unrelated to the controlled demolition of an old gas holder that occurred earlier on Wednesday evening.

The steel giant expressed gratitude to both site staff and emergency responders for their swift and professional reaction to the crisis.
