Organizers announced Monday, June 1, 2026, that all registered drivers for the historic Route 66 Capital Cruise in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will receive automatic registration fee refunds.

The refunds follow logistical issues that blocked some participants from the parade route during Saturday's event.

Record-Breaking Parade

The parade successfully established a new Guinness World Record for the world's largest car cruise with 3,596 classic vehicles crossing the finish line.

This shattered the previous record of 2,491 vehicles set in Puerto Rico in 2017.

Despite the milestone, which drew an estimated 100,000 spectators, traffic congestion around Expo Square left hundreds of registered motorists stranded.

Organizers capped entry at 11 a. m.

to protect the record attempt from pacing gaps.

Jonathan Huskey with Visit Tulsa addressed the event's split outcome and confirmed the broad refund policy during an appearance on News on 6.

"It was an event that really planted Tulsa's flag as the capital of Route 66," said Huskey.

The registration process required participants to check in ahead of time, drawing 5,100 initial sign-ups.

Only 4,760 drivers secured credentials at Expo Square on Thursday and Friday.

"There was a moment early on that I kind of stepped away," said Huskey.

"It was almost a little emotional because everybody was there and having such a good time."

On Saturday morning, approximately 4,300 drivers arrived at the staging grounds to be shuttled onto the active route monitored by an official adjudicator.

"He clicked every single car and when the final car passed," said Huskey.

Guinness officials reached the final tally after deducting vehicles that broke down, experienced mechanical problems, or created substantial distance gaps during the procession.

"Drivers were instructed to arrive in as orderly a fashion as possible," said Huskey.

Though staging operations at Expo Square proceeded as designed, external traffic backups across Tulsa delayed participants attempting to reach the gates before the cutoff.

"On behalf of the Capital Cruise team and everyone involved, we are sorry for anyone that didn't make it and was unable to participate because that is not at all what we wanted to happen," said Huskey.

An outside management team directed traffic operations during the event, and tourism officials are currently reviewing feedback from local classic car clubs.

"It doesn't replicate the experience of being on the route because Route 66 is iconic," said Huskey.

"But it was just the right thing to do to try to help make things right a little bit."

The automatically processed refund checks will be mailed directly to all registered drivers by the end of June 2026 without requiring formal claims.

"Any driver that registered and checked in and was not able to make it onto the parade route they will absolutely 100% have the opportunity to request a refund," said Huskey to 2 News Oklahoma on Sunday, prior to the expansion of the refund policy.

"They'll get communication in the register email within the coming days," said Huskey.

In a separate public statement issued to 2 News, Visit Tulsa clarified that the rapid deceleration of arriving vehicles forced the strict operational capping decision.

"The window for drivers to arrive at Expo Square and stage for the parade was between 6-10:00 a.

m. At approximately 11:00 a.

m.

, the flow of cars arriving at Expo had slowed to the point that continuing to let them on the route would have created large gaps and jeopardized the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt.

At that point, the decision was made to cap the Cruise entrants and place the final car at the end.

Everyone who registered is still a full participant and world record holder, and we are incredibly appreciative of each and every driver who took part in this unprecedented event."
