The Amsterdam Disciplinary Board has imposed a four-week conditional suspension on prominent attorney Geert-Jan Knoops.
The ruling, issued on June 1, 2026, follows allegations of excessive billing and inadequate case file management.

The suspension is suspended for a two-year probation period. It will only take effect if Knoops commits another infraction within that timeframe.
Violations Found
The disciplinary board found that Knoops failed to provide a written warning to a client in a sex offenses case.
The warning should have addressed the risks of drastically changing his statement when a conflicting statement already existed in the criminal file.
Additionally, the board determined that Knoops charged excessive fees for his services.
He did not provide the client with an advance cost estimate or monthly hourly overviews, which the tribunal deemed seriously culpable under disciplinary law.
The tribunal also issued a formal reprimand to his wife and law partner, Carry Knoops, for her involvement in the matter.

Background of the Case
This disciplinary action follows an April ruling by the Amsterdam District Court in a civil case.
That court ordered the legal couple to repay over 95,000 euros in attorney fees to the former client.
The financial integrity dispute arose after the former client accused Knoops' Advocates of breach of contract at exorbitant costs.
The accusation came after the client's conviction in the sex offenses case.
The disciplinary judge partially agreed with the complaint, ruling that both Geert-Jan and Carry Knoops violated the core legal value of financial integrity.
The Amsterdam Disciplinary Board stated that Knoops had "excessively declared for the work performed."

The financial restitution ordered by the civil court remains a separate binding obligation alongside the newly issued disciplinary sanctions.
