During the live Netflix special broadcast from the Kia Forum on May 10, 2026, Hart placed Smith on a metaphorical monument of individuals who harbor animosity toward Black communities.

Smith noted the remark caused him personal distress.

Reflecting on his current circumstances during the broadcast of "Straight Shooter with Stephen A. ," Smith expressed the emotional toll the recent months have taken on him.

"This year has been very, very difficult for me," said Stephen A. Smith, ESPN host.

Smith clarified that his grievance was not with the nature of the comedic performance itself, but rather with the specific relationship he shared with the person delivering the line.

"I have no issue with the joke, if it was a joke. If it wasn't a joke, I still wouldn't have an issue with it," said Stephen A.

Smith.

The media personality elaborated that the comment disrupted his peace because it originated from someone he viewed as an authentic acquaintance.

"I have an issue with the fact that it came from him, somebody that I kind of know a little bit, that I got a lot of love and respect for," said Stephen A.

Smith noted that the public characterization conflicted deeply with his personal history of community advocacy and defensive efforts on behalf of his peers.

"At a time in my life, knowing I've spent my life fighting on behalf of my community, that people try to continue this narrative about me that I know is false, but that nevertheless still hurts to hear out of the mouth of anyone who knows me," said Stephen A.

Smith.

The commentator then shifted his focus toward external political entities, stating that financial security has not shielded him from severe public backlash regarding his independent commentary.

"Even though I've been very, very blessed and fortunate to secure my future in ways that I never thought imaginable…the flip side to that is that I've taken a lot of heat because of perceived positions that I may have had," said Stephen A.

Smith.

Smith alleged that prominent individuals within the political landscape have actively coordinated measures to suppress his public platform despite his personal voting record.

"As a result, you've had some people from the Democratic Party who don't know that I'm aware of the steps and the lengths that they've been willing to go through to silence me, even though I'm somebody who has religiously voted Democrat and I support most Democratic views," said Stephen A.

The dialogue prompted a public response from podcast host Jason Whitlock, who analyzed Smith's situation by comparing it to his own past media controversies.

"What Stephen A. is experiencing is what I've experienced.

(It) doesn't matter how many black people you employ, how many opportunities you create for black people... it just doesn't matter," said Jason Whitlock, Host of Fearless.

Whitlock further asserted that the scrutiny remains an inevitable outcome for media personalities transitioning into political commentary.

"Stephen A.

keeps flirting with politics and indicating he wants to be a political influencer or a political candidate," said Jason Whitlock.

Whitlock concluded that Smith must adapt to the rigorous nature of political discourse as he continues expanding his broadcasting reach.

"This is what comes along with it. He's just got to accept that," said Jason Whitlock.

The ongoing broadcast schedule for Smith's program continues weekly on SiriusXM at 6 p. m.
