New Mexico State Police have identified human remains discovered in the Carson National Forest as Melissa Casias, a Taos woman who disappeared nearly a year ago.

The remains were found on May 28 by a hiker in the McGaffey Ridge area. Investigators also recovered a handgun at the scene.

The Office of the Medical Investigator positively identified Casias through coordinated forensic efforts.

Casias was last seen on June 26, 2025, after she failed to show up for work.

Family members later found her purse, identification, and mobile phones left behind, raising concerns for her safety.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not yet determined the cause and manner of death. The Office of the Medical Investigator will conduct a subsequent anthropological examination on the remains.

State police confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives continue to follow leads regarding her disappearance.

“The New Mexico State Police extend their deepest condolences to the Casias and Mondragon families during this difficult time,” state police said.

The agency did not provide further updates regarding potential suspects or the origin of the recovered firearm.
