High volumes of traffic caused major delays across the Lancashire motorway and road network on Friday, May 29, 2026, as holidaymakers headed home at the end of the half-term break.

According to Traffic England, congestion built up on the M6 southbound side, stretching from Junction 33 at Garstang all the way down to Junction 26 at Skelmersdale.

The agency reported that the heaviest delays of up to half an hour occurred around Leyland, spanning from Junction 28 through to Junction 27 for Standish.

As reported by Highways England, the traffic disruption on the southbound stretch from Junction 33 down to Junction 30 continued past 4 p.

Increased travel toward the Lakes and Blackpool also triggered delays on the M61 northbound, with queues backing up to Junction 8 at Chorley where the motorway meets the M6.

Additional traffic snarls affected the M55 eastbound, where a tailback formed between Junction 2 and Junction 1 connecting to the M6 in Preston.

The slow-moving congestion additionally caused shorter tailbacks on the M6 southbound up to Junction 31A.

While no specific accidents or incidents were initially reported, the high volume of vehicles simultaneously impacted the A585 network throughout the afternoon.
