A former Central Intelligence Agency executive accused of stealing over $40 million in gold bars remains in custody in Virginia after a judge postponed his initial court appearance.

David Rush allegedly took 303 gold bullion bars, each weighing 2.2 pounds, along with more than $2 million in foreign currency from a government storage office.

Authorities arrested Rush on May 19, 2026, following an internal investigation that discovered the missing assets.

Luxury Watches and Fraud Allegations

Federal agents executing a search warrant at Rush's residence in Virginia also uncovered 35 luxury watches, including numerous Rolex timepieces.

The formal charge of stealing public money focuses heavily on allegations that Rush falsified his credentials to obtain his intelligence position.

An affidavit submitted to the US district court details the timeline and scope of the requested government assets.

The filed documents do not specify the ultimate purpose or destination for the amassed wealth.

FBI special agent Matthew Johnson wrote in the criminal complaint that between November 2025 and March 2026, Rush made several requests to obtain a significant quantity of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars for work-related expenses.

The prosecution further alleges that Rush committed timecard fraud and misrepresented his military status after joining the agency in 2009 with top secret clearance.

Investigators state he falsely claimed to be a navy pilot and a navy reserve captain.

Johnson noted that since being honorably discharged in February 2015, Rush claimed 744 hours of military leave on his official timesheet, representing approximately $77,000 in compensation.

The multi-agency probe began internally before moving to federal criminal investigators. According to the New York Times, the top leadership of the intelligence community initiated the handoff.

A joint statement from the CIA and the FBI said that after a CIA internal investigation identified potential violations of the law, CIA director John Ratcliffe referred the information to the FBI for a law enforcement investigation.
