A gunman was shot dead by law enforcement officers on Saturday after approaching a security checkpoint and opening fire near the White House, according to federal officials.

President Donald Trump was inside the executive mansion during the incident, which prompted a brief security lockdown of the entire complex.

The gunfire also resulted in injuries to a bystander.

Authorities are still determining whether the bystander was struck by the suspect's initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange.

No Secret Service personnel were harmed, and officials confirmed that the president's safety was never compromised.

Trump later commended law enforcement on social media for their "swift and professional action" and referenced his future infrastructure proposals.

The president connected the security breach to a previous incident that occurred a month earlier at a Washington hotel during a media gathering.

Media reports indicate the unnamed suspect had a history of mental illness and a prior arrest for an unauthorized entry attempt at a White House gate last year.

The Secret Service reported that the individual walked up to the security post at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW just after 6 p.

m. local time and drew a weapon.

Officers struck the suspect, who was transported to a hospital and later died.

An ABC News correspondent was recording a television report nearby when multiple gunshots interrupted the broadcast.

"We were told to sprint to the press briefing room," said Selina Wang, White House correspondent for ABC News.

Federal investigators arrived shortly after the shooting to assist local law enforcement and protective teams with scene management.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media that the FBI was on the scene supporting the Secret Service.

A local television news anchor noted that approximately 30 rounds were discharged during the incident before normalcy was restored.

This confrontation marks the third high-profile security incident near the president or his administration within a one-month period in Washington.

A previous event involved an armed individual firing near the travel route of Vice President JD Vance's motorcade.
