A lightning strike severely disrupted train traffic around Utrecht on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, completely halting services toward Amsterdam and Schiphol, according to the Dutch national railway operator NS.

The disruption also reduced the number of operating trains traveling toward Arnhem and Eindhoven following the morning incident.

The severe weather led the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) to issue a code yellow weather warning effective from 10:00 a.

m. until 6:00 p.

m. for Utrecht and seven other provinces.

The warning anticipated severe thunderstorms with hail up to 2 centimeters and wind gusts reaching 60 kilometers per hour.

Systems Shut Down After Lightning Strike

Systems automatically shut down for safety reasons after lightning struck just before 11:00 a. m.

near a ProRail traffic control post located approximately one kilometer from Utrecht Centraal station, according to a ProRail spokesperson.

A contractor was dispatched to investigate the extent of the damage caused by the strike.

Certain railway systems remained deactivated as a precautionary measure until the assessment could be completed, leaving components such as signaling lights temporarily without power.

In a separate regional incident, a car completely burned out in the Overvecht district of Utrecht on the preceding evening, as reported by a police spokesperson.

The vehicle caught fire after it reportedly veered off course at a bend and collided with an electrical substation.

Police declined to comment on the condition of the driver because it was a single-vehicle accident.
