Secondary Market Prices Surge
Listings on eBay for opening weekend IMAX 70mm showtimes on July 17 ranged between $500 and $1,000, according to Forbes.
The premium tickets targeted specific theater locations in New York, Texas, Florida, and Arizona.
The system overload began when ticket sales went live on the AMC website at 12 p. m.

Wait times exceeded one hour during peak disruption, though normal operations resumed later in the day. Representatives for AMC and Fandango did not immediately comment on the outages.

Consumer demand centered on the specialized IMAX 70mm format, which offers three times the resolution of standard 35mm film projection.
"The Odyssey" is the first feature film captured entirely with IMAX cameras, ensuring a consistent cinematic aspect ratio throughout the screening.
This surge in secondary market scalping mirrors previous high-demand theatrical releases, including "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021, "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015.
The film is Nolan's follow-up to "Oppenheimer," which earned $975 million globally and won seven Academy Awards in 2024.
