Prince William made a surprise visit to the Prince of Peckham pub in south-east London on Wednesday to show support for British public houses as vital community hubs.

He joined patrons at the weekly "Chatty Patty" breakfast club, a program designed to combat loneliness through conversation over tea.

The hospitality sector is under severe financial pressure, with 161 pubs closing permanently in the first quarter of the year, according to the British Beer and Pub Association, resulting in about 2,400 job losses.

Industry representatives cite rising minimum wages and changes to employers' National Insurance as key factors.

During his time behind the bar, the Prince tried pouring a pint alongside the owner and spoke with local community members.

"I love pubs," Prince William said. "I want to do as much as I can to support them because I love the community."

He emphasized that pubs serve as essential social anchors for neighborhoods across the UK. "We need to protect our pubs," he added.

The venue's founder, Clement Ogbonnaya, established the business in 2017 as an inclusive space for diverse local groups.

He said the royal visit highlighted the importance of such initiatives. "We want Chatty Patty to exist not just in Peckham but all around London," Ogbonnaya said.

He noted that the Prince discussed expanding supportive spaces for young black Britons across the capital.

"The key thing he was talking about was how do we address that – how do we get more of these spaces with all of this energy, all this love and enthusiasm throughout the whole of London," Ogbonnaya added.

Joking about the pint-pulling demonstration, Ogbonnaya said, "The pressure was on, I’m not going to lie.

He can’t beat me, he can’t pour a better pint than me, but it wasn’t too far off."

Before concluding, the Prince sampled local food and lightheartedly referenced his official residence. "It blew my mind.

I'm hoping Deliveroo can deliver this to Windsor," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prince William visited Pecan, a local charity that runs a foodbank and helps people escape poverty and homelessness.

He discussed how constant digital media can negatively impact mental health.

"With everyone’s phones now you can get so much news, that actually it completely overwhelms you in terms of being able to process this and that," he said.

He warned that devices often exacerbate distress by presenting unfavorable news.

"You reinforce innocently [just] looking at your phone and the news so I can see that it’s overwhelming when you feel like it’s just negativity all the time."

During the tour, he heard personal stories from former clients who rebuilt their lives through the charity's programs.

"It’s amazing what you guys do. It puts people’s lives back on track again," he said.

He also helped volunteers pack emergency food parcels at the Southwark Foodbank warehouse.

The visit follows a private donation by the Prince and Princess of Wales after a burglary in September 2024 stole £3,000 worth of supplies.
