Three people were killed and a fourth person was seriously injured in a collision on the A1 in Northumberland on Thursday afternoon.

The crash involved a silver Volkswagen Polo and a red Hyundai i20 on a single carriageway section between Denwick and South Charlton.

Northumbria Police said the two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when the collision occurred at approximately 2:30 p.

m. BST.

Emergency services attended the scene, and the road was closed in both directions for about seven hours to allow investigations before reopening.

The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, and his female passenger, a woman in her 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the Volkswagen Polo, in her 60s, also died. The male Polo driver, in his 60s, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigation Underway

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched a full inquiry to establish the circumstances of the crash.

Police have notified the next of kin of the Volkswagen Polo occupants and are working to contact the family members of those in the Hyundai.

Inspector Steven Clare of Northumbria Police described the incident as "incredibly tragic" and urged witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage to come forward.

"Our thoughts remain firmly with all of their loved ones, and we are dedicated to getting them the answers they deserve," he said.

Police are particularly keen to speak with individuals who initially stopped to assist but left before officers arrived.

"We know this is a very busy stretch of road through Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions," Insp Clare added.

Drivers who traveled the route around 2:30 p. m.

are urged to check their dashcams, even if they did not witness the collision directly.

Renewed Calls for Road Dualling

Following the fatal incident, the leader of Northumberland County Council renewed demands for infrastructure improvements on the A1 between Morpeth and Berwick.

Cllr Glen Sanderson said the current single carriageway is inadequate for today's traffic volumes, often causing standstills during summer.

"For over thirty years, like many others, I have campaigned for the dualling of the A1 through our County," he said.

He announced plans to contact the transport minister to secure funding for the expansion project, noting that the council has already spent £70 million on preparation.

"The awful tragedy just adds to the far too big a list of innocent people being killed or injured," Sanderson said.

The Department for Transport previously outlined minor safety upgrades in Road Investment Strategy 3, but Sanderson said partial adjustments will not resolve the issues.

"It will not prevent the fact that our main spine road between two countries is inadequate for today's level of traffic," he added.

Sanderson urged a non-partisan approach to financing the upgrade, emphasizing that the county contributes around £35 billion annually in road tax.
