The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the double murder conviction of former lawyer Alex Murdaugh on May 13, 2026, granting him a new trial in Colleton County.
The reversal stems from extensive jury tampering by the court clerk.

A formal remittitur issued by the state's highest court returned jurisdiction to the local trial court. Defense attorneys and state prosecutors can now begin refiling legal motions.
Murdaugh was found guilty on March 2, 2023, for the fatal shootings of his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, at their Moselle hunting estate.
The reversal centers on the actions of former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill.
Hill allegedly pressured jurors to secure a quick conviction to drive sales for her self-published book.
An anonymized juror revealed that Hill systematically compromised the panel's independence before deliberations began.
"Y'all are going to hear things that will throw you all off," recalled Juror Z, regarding Hill's comments.
The juror further stated that Hill instructed the panel not to be misled by Murdaugh's testimony, directing them to scrutinize his body language.
According to an affidavit filed during the appeals process, these improper comments heavily influenced the final guilty verdict.
"I had questions about Mr. Murdaugh's guilt," stated Juror Z.
The high court characterized the clerk's actions as a disgraceful effort to undermine the state's legal framework.
A fellow clerk later disclosed that Hill openly discussed her desire for a guilty verdict to maximize her book promotion profits.

"The breathtaking and disgraceful effort of Hill to undermine the jury process is unprecedented in South Carolina," declared the South Carolina Supreme Court in its official ruling.
While post-trial hearings conducted two years ago recognized Hill's lack of credibility, the initial presiding judge denied a retrial after concluding the interference did not alter the outcome.
This decision stood despite direct admissions from the jury room regarding Hill's external pressure.
"I felt influenced to find Mr. Murdaugh guilty by reason of Ms. Hill's remarks, before I entered the jury room," stated Juror Z.
The narrative surrounding the final days of the 2023 trial included structured visits to the crime scene where Hill claimed a shared religious realization occurred among the court staff and the jury members.
"God gives us all gifts, and the gift of discernment is shared by many.
Some of us either from the courthouse, law enforcement, or jury at Moselle had an epiphany and shared our thoughts with our eyes.
At that moment, many of us standing there knew. I knew and they knew that Alex was guilty," wrote Becky Hill in her book.
Despite the overturned murder conviction, Murdaugh remains incarcerated at the McCormick Correctional Institution.
He is currently serving a 40-year federal sentence and a concurrent 27-year state sentence after pleading guilty to 22 counts of bank fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering tied to a $9 million embezzlement scheme.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced his office will lead the upcoming prosecution and intends to push for the new trial as quickly as possible.
