York Pride 2026 will proceed as planned at the Knavesmire on Saturday, May 30, despite a homophobic letter sent to organizers.

The annual festival runs from 11 a. m.

to 7:30 p. m.

, with a 90-minute parade starting from Parliament Street at 12 p. m.

Greg Stephenson, chair and managing director of York Pride, received the abusive letter after distributing event logistics and road closure details to local residents.

Stephenson said the incident will be reported to North Yorkshire Police.

"We still get asked 'Why do we still need a Pride?' Well this is the perfect example of why we do," he said.

The letter contained explicit language and claims that not all residents support the event, referencing historical arrests of LGBTQ+ individuals.

"It's just been covered in some quite nasty things around Pride and saying that 'we're not normal' and that 'we used to arrest people like you'," Stephenson said.

This is the first time in 12 years of organizing the event that he has received such hateful feedback.

Despite the distress, organizers emphasized that the individuals responsible represent a small minority.

"These people, you know they are in the minority these days, which is brilliant, but they do still exist and they are out there," Stephenson said.

The festival will feature a Main Stage, Cabaret Stage, and an expanded Family Area supported by external sponsorships.

The YorkMix Stage, sponsored by recruitment firm P. J Staffing, will offer free circus skills workshops and activities for children and families.

Paul Evans McCallum, founder of P. J Staffing, said his business prioritizes a people-first approach.

"For me, it's about being people first," McCallum said.

The sponsorship also benefits Candlelighters, a Yorkshire-based charity supporting children facing cancer, ahead of the regional 'Pink It Up' fundraising campaign.

Several city landmarks, including Clifford's Tower and the Bar Walls, will light up pink on June 6, 2026, to promote the campaign.

The festival line-up includes performances from Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle, pop vocalist Joe McElderry, multiple drag artists, and the cast of Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
