Thousands of Vancouver Island residents were asked to stop using the sewage system on Tuesday after an uncontrolled wastewater release occurred.

The incident happened during an upgrade project at a pump station, according to the Comox Valley Regional District.

The overflow flowed directly into the intertidal zone near the Comox Marina.

Kris La Rose, General Manager of Engineering Services at the District, confirmed the location and impact.

"The pump station is right next to the intertidal zone, so right next to the ocean," he said.

The leak was at the bottom of a submerged hole, making it difficult for emergency crews to access.

Repairs were completed shortly after 6 p. m.

No injuries were reported.

Residents in Courtenay, the K'ómoks First Nation, and Comox may now resume normal water usage, including flushing toilets and washing clothes.

Environmental Restrictions Remain

Despite the repair, environmental restrictions are still active.

Officials advise the public to avoid entering the ocean, swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding near the shoreline, Goose Spit, and Comox Marina.

Contact with ocean water, mudflats, and standing water should be avoided. Children and pets must be kept away from all area beaches and estuary access points.
