The hit CBS drama series Tracker concluded its third season on Sunday, May 24, 2026, with an episode that resolved a major investigation while introducing a new mystery regarding the past of central character Colter Shaw.
The season finale, titled "The Best Ones," featured guest star Jensen Ackles returning as Colter's brother, Russell Shaw, to assist in a dark investigation regarding a nefarious research project.

Written by Elwood Reid and Travis Donnelly and directed by Ken Olin, the finale depicted the brothers rescuing Chrono Stasis test subjects from a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded project.
The narrative culminated in a clandestine deal where Russell agreed to execute a questionable job for the leader of the operation in exchange for the erasure of an official file detailing their late father's actions.
Prior to disappearing, Russell contacted attorney Reenie Green to secure her promise to prevent Colter from pursuing his whereabouts.
The concluding scenes also disclosed a previously unseen residential property belonging to Colter, signaling a narrative shift as production for the fourth season prepares to relocate from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Los Angeles after securing a California tax credit.
Evolution of the Supporting Cast
Speaking on the structural development of the series, executive producer Elwood Reid discussed the deliberate evolution of the supporting cast following several character departures from the initial ensemble, which originally featured handlers Teddi and Velma, hacker Bobby, and Reenie.
"I do think it's evolving.
If I can't evolve those characters — Randy or Reenie or Bobby — they're not just people that just pick up the phone and go, 'OK, here is the answer.'
That's when the show is phoning it in," stated Elwood Reid.
The creative team expressed a desire to avoid predictable procedural formulas by intentionally changing how the lead character utilizes his network and encounters local individuals during his travels.
"Meeting these [local] weird characters is something we're going to try to do more of as the season goes on.
Just Colter coming in and interacting with other characters. That's fun to see Justin flex those muscles with really good guest cast members," added Reid.
Reflecting on the core appeal of the television program, the executive producer emphasized that the narrative continues to focus heavily on the central protagonist portrayed by Justin Hartley.
"The audience leans in because they've seen that character before. But I think they're still thinking the central DNA of the show is Colter.
With this guy, what makes him appealing is he is a mystery to himself," remarked Reid.
The production changes align with ongoing character development as the central figure continues to uncover hidden aspects of his childhood history.
"He's a mystery to the audience. We see him and his off time putting together some pieces of his past," explained Reid.

The final sequences of the season featured the return of the character Keaton, who delivered the damaged truck belonging to Colter's late father to the new home base.
"I don't know if we'll ever put it all together, but he's going to struggle to continue to do that.
That's just as far as we have thought. The biggest improvement we made this year — in my opinion — was getting people in the same room.
Just that connectivity, I do think the audience is enjoying seeing their characters in the same place physically," concluded Reid.
The dialogue between the characters in the final minutes highlighted the symbolic importance of the vehicle to the unfolding multi-season mystery.
"There's always a use for men like you," said the man behind the operation.
The dialogue continued as the terms of the confidential arrangement were established between the two parties.
"And Colter?" asked Russell.
The unnamed supervisor confirmed that the arrangement would provide mutual protection for both of the Shaw brothers.
"Same," replied the man behind the operation. The interaction concluded with explicit instructions regarding the physical disposition of the classified documentation.
"And the file?" asked Russell.
The leader of the covert operation specified the final condition required to secure the clearance.
"You take it, and you burn it," replied the man behind the operation.
Upon receiving the vehicle at his property, Colter noted the history of the mechanical repairs he had previously attempted with his father.
"Spent a lot of time on this thing, working on it with my dad," told Colter to Keaton.
The conversation concluded with a reflection on the mechanical reliability of the automotive transport.

"We got it up and running once, but it gave out on us again," told Colter to Keaton.
