A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the western flank of Mauna Loa on Hawaii Island on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 9:46 p.

The quake triggered widespread shaking across multiple islands but did not generate a tsunami.

Details of the Earthquake

The U. S.

Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was located about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napoopoo area in the South Kona district.

A magnitude 3.2 aftershock occurred six minutes later just northwest of the initial tremor.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami was generated. However, some areas near the epicenter experienced very strong shaking.

Shaking Felt Across the State

According to Hawaii News Now, residents felt strong shaking across the state. Reports came from as far away as Omao and Hanalei on Kauai.

Significant vibrations were also felt on Oahu in Kailua, Ewa Beach, and Kapolei. Emergency lines received calls from Makawao and Wailuku on Maui.

Authorities reported that the impact of the primary quake reverberated well beyond the Big Island. No immediate damage or injuries have been reported.
