A leaking chemical tank carrying volatile and flammable liquid forced emergency officials to issue evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residents in Garden Grove, California, on Friday, May 23, 2026.

The hazardous material situation involves a storage tank containing 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a chemical used in plastic manufacturing.

Emergency responders discovered the leakage originally on Thursday and immediately initiated containment strategies.

Two Possible Outcomes

Incident Commander Craig Covey outlined two potential scenarios.

"The tank fails and spills a total of about 6-7,000 gallons of very bad chemicals into the parking lot in that area or, two, the tank goes into a thermal runaway and blows up, affecting the tanks around them that have fuel or chemicals in them as well," he said.

Emergency crews spent Friday spraying water jets at the 34,000-gallon capacity structure to lower internal temperatures.

Firefighters established a large perimeter to isolate the hazard area from surrounding properties.

Responders focused heavily on cooling the structural walls to prevent a catastrophic failure. Crews also began constructing physical barriers to shield nearby public infrastructure from potential liquid runoff.

Later Friday evening, Covey noted that aggressive water cooling operations had successfully lowered internal temperatures toward safer levels.

"It's down to a temperature around 61 degrees, with 50 being its happy place so those efforts are succeeding," he said.

Hazardous material experts continued monitoring the tank stability through the night. Teams remained on-site to evaluate alternative methods for rendering the chemical stable.

Local law enforcement coordinated the massive displacement of the local population throughout the day.

Officials confirmed that while many complied, a portion of the community chose to remain in the area.

Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra stated that approximately 40,000 residents were affected by the mandatory evacuation directive, with several thousand individuals refusing to leave their homes.

Regional health authorities supported the containment perimeter to protect public safety from potential airborne vapors.

Orange County health officer Regina Chinsio Kwong advised the public regarding specific sensory indicators of the chemical.

She appealed for anyone who might notice "a fruity and heavy smell" to alert authorities. "Smelling it doesn't mean you've reached a level that causes symptoms.

But we don't want you to smell that. So we need to know if you're smelling it," she said.

No casualties or physical injuries were documented by Friday evening, according to local emergency services.

The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that methyl methacrylate causes acute irritation to human skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.

Health authorities also warned about potential neurological impacts resulting from sudden exposure to the chemical compound.

Personnel remain on the scene to block the chemical from entering storm drains or river channels connected to the ocean.
