The show explores the dangers of online scams and surveillance.
It stars Tatiana Maslany as Paula, a New York City magazine fact-checker navigating a bitter custody battle over her third-grade daughter, Hazel, played by Nola Wallace.
Paula regularly video-chats with an online performer named Trevor, portrayed by Brandon Flynn, on a fictional sex website called CamPop.
She seeks solace amid her chaotic circumstances.
During one of their digital sessions, Paula witnesses a masked intruder break into Trevor's apartment and violently assault him.
She records the incident and contacts the police.
Detective Sofia Gonzalez, played by Dolly De Leon, dismisses the event as a financial scam.
Trevor subsequently demands $50,000 from Paula to pay a kidnapper's ransom, threatening to expose recordings of their intimate meetings and ruin her life if she refuses.
Paula uses her professional verification skills to track Trevor's physical location. This drags her into a web of murder, corporate malfeasance, and extortion.
Her ex-husband Karl, played by Jake Johnson, complicates her situation.
He demands to rewrite their custody agreement so he can relocate to Boise, Idaho, with his new partner, Mallory, played by Jessy Hodges.
Director David Gordon Green on Crafting the Pilot
Director David Gordon Green helmed the pilot episode. He established the visual language and thematic tension of the series by balancing suspense with comedic elements.
Green recalled his upbringing in Richardson, Texas, where his childhood obsession with cinema began. He read local theater listings and worked at movie theaters.
"Every Thursday I would walk," said Green, remembering how he lived a few blocks from a grocery store that carried the Observer.
"So, every Thursday I would go get it."
The filmmaker spent his youth tracking down free screening giveaways and waiting in line for preview tickets in North Dallas.

"Free movies were my thing," said Green.
He spent time reading industry publications at the Richardson Public Library to memorize box office statistics.
"While other kids had more active and enjoyable fantasy life or athletics life, I was just trying to figure out how I was going to make my way into the movie and TV business," said Green.
At age 12, Green skipped school to work as an extra on the local set of "Born on the Fourth of July."
He observed director Oliver Stone and cinematographer Robert Richardson. "Bit by the bug," said Green.
Green later built a diverse filmmaking career directing indie films, studio comedies like "Pineapple Express," and television series such as "The Righteous Gemstones."
He explained that his work on the pilot allowed him to experiment with the tone before passing the project to subsequent directors.
"What I love about pilots is you get a great group of collaborators and some creative material, and you start putting paint on a canvas," said Green.
"You establish things, you just test some things, you see what works and what doesn’t, and then you hand it off.
You pass the baton to the next filmmaker."
The series addresses broader societal anxieties regarding persistent digital surveillance and intimate deceit. "There’s a lot of just oppressive and depressing content on TV," said Green.
"I don’t want to watch it, much less spend months and months making it."
The production sought to maintain dramatic momentum by infusing lighter elements into the thriller framework.
Green described the show as "propulsive dramatically, but also eye-opening," with "enough bubblegum and popcorn entertainment infused."
The show features an ensemble cast including Murray Bartlett as Paula's primary antagonist, Jon Michael Hill as Detective Baxter, Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg as Geri, Charlie Hall as Rudy, Daniel Dale as Sky, and Raymond Lee as soccer coach Steve.
