A failing aerospace facility tank holding volatile chemicals in Garden Grove, California, prompted emergency officials to order the evacuation of approximately 40,000 residents on Friday, May 22, 2026, due to imminent threats of a toxic spill or a catastrophic explosion.

The Orange County Fire Authority initially responded to the hazardous materials incident at a GKN Aerospace business at 3:30 p.

Emergency responders discovered that methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable and toxic liquid used to manufacture plastics, was leaking from a 34,000-gallon vat.

Fire crews worked through the night to secure the facility, but water sprayed to cool the equipment caused pumps to fail and froze a critical valve.

Consequently, the unstable tank remains actively in crisis, forcing a widening of the evacuation perimeter across six cities, including Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.

The evacuation zone spans north of Trask Avenue, south of Ball Road, east of Valley View Street, and west of Dale Street.

Authorities closed Beach Boulevard from Garden Grove Boulevard to Orangewood Avenue, along with multiple off-ramps on the 22 Freeway, while several school district facilities suspended operations.

Two Possible Outcomes

Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey outlined the critical situation facing emergency personnel at the scene.

"There are literally two options left remaining," said Covey.

"One, the tank fails and spills a total of about 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of very bad chemicals into the parking lot in that area, or two, the tank goes into a thermal runaway and blows up, affecting the tanks that are around them that have fuel or the chemicals in them as well."

The division chief noted that air quality monitoring shows healthy limits and no active gas plume exists, though police are conducting door-to-door notifications.

"Essentially, we're at two current options and outcomes of this tank. One, it fails, and cracks, and all the product leaks out onto the ground," said Covey.

If the tank cracks, containment barriers and sand will be deployed to block the toxic material from reaching storm drains and waterways.

"The other option that was told to us is that it blows up," said Covey.

Emergency teams are currently monitoring the internal temperature of the chemical vat to determine if a full tactical withdrawal of personnel is required.

"We also have a set temperature where, when it reaches that point, we know the tank is going into thermal runaway, and we're going to pull everybody out of the area, make sure it's safe, and let the tank do what it's going to do," said Covey.

Political and Community Response

Political leaders are tracking the ongoing hazardous materials operations and coordinating with interagency emergency management teams.

"My office is in close contact with local police, fire, and emergency response officials as they work to contain the hazardous materials, assess air quality, and ensure residents and first responders are safe," said Rep.

Derek Tran, D-Westminster.

The congressman added that he has reached out to federal disaster relief agencies to secure assistance for the city.

"I am in contact with federal disaster relief officials, including FEMA and the EPA, to urge them to provide any available federal assistance for Garden Grove.

I encourage everyone in the affected area to follow guidance from local authorities and avoid the impacted zones until further guidance is issued," said Tran.

Displaced residents are being directed to emergency reception centers established at the Cypress Recreation and Community Center and the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley confirmed that the temporary conversion of the Garden Grove recreation facility into a shelter will suspend local voting center operations on Saturday.

"This emergency will not prevent residents from voting," said Foley.

"The County of Orange Registrar of Voters moved quickly to protect voters, election workers, and displaced families while keeping voting access open.

If you evacuated without your ballot, go to any Vote Center, request a replacement ballot, and cast your vote safely.

Public safety comes first, and voter access continues."
