Global music superstars will honor Australian music legend John Farnham at a massive tribute concert on September 20 at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena.

The event, titled The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend, serves as a fundraiser for Head and Neck Cancer Australia following the singer's own health battles.

The announcement follows confirmation from the 76-year-old icon that he will permanently retire from live performing.

Farnham underwent a life-saving 12-hour surgery to remove a mouth tumor in 2022, which was followed by facial and jaw reconstructions that left him with ongoing physical challenges.

Lineup and Performances

Promoters Paul Dainty and Tony Cochrane organized the event, which features a lineup of over 120 artists including Keith Urban, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena, Human Nature, Jessica Mauboy, Kate Ceberano, Ross Wilson, and Richard Marx.

International headliners Celine Dion and Hugh Jackman are scheduled to perform remotely via satellite from overseas.

Farnham initially rejected the proposal for a tribute concert twice because the idea of a live tribute while he was still alive made him feel uncomfortable.

However, the decision to direct the proceeds toward the cancer services that assisted his recovery ultimately changed his mind.

Farnham's Health and Retirement

"We can rule that out," stated John Farnham during an interview with the Herald Sun regarding his future on stage.

"Because of the surgeries to my mouth and face over the past few years, singing on stage is not something I can consider again.

It's just not possible."

The singer expressed immense gratitude for the artists participating in the event, noting that the concert represents a way for him to give back to a meaningful cause.

"The fact that so many extraordinary artists from around the world have so generously agreed to be part of this night is incredibly humbling," said Farnham in an official statement.

"[It] says far more about the spirit behind this event than it does about me."

Farnham also credited his wife, Jill, for providing the emotional strength necessary to endure his intense surgical recovery and rehabilitation over the past few years.

"It's a simple answer – Jill. I honestly don't think I'd be here if it wasn't for her.

She has been through everything with me," Farnham shared with the Herald Sun.

"Throughout it all, Jilly kept reminding me why I needed to keep pushing through.

And it wasn't just me – she was supporting the boys and the whole family at the same time.

Everyone needs to know, Jill is the rock for all of us."

In a family statement released during a holiday gathering, the family previously expressed optimism regarding the long-term health outlook for the former Australian of the Year.

"There is still a long road of recovery and healing ahead of us, but we know John is up for the task," said his wife Jill.

Participating artists expressed deep admiration for Farnham, whose 1986 multi-platinum album Whispering Jack remains one of the most successful records in Australian music history.

"John Farnham is truly one of the great voices of the world," stated Celine Dion ahead of the tribute performance.

"I have such beautiful memories of the time we shared on stage together — his generosity, his humour, and that incredible voice that fills your heart the moment you hear it."

The event is expected to provide a significant financial injection into the local entertainment sector, according to government representatives.

"This is going to be an unforgettable night, with stars from around the world paying tribute to an Australian living legend," stated Victoria's Minister for Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos.

Organizers noted that convincing the legendary singer to approve the event required significant persistence due to his humble nature.

"We had the unique problem that John wasn't so keen for it, (he) didn't think he deserved the attention," promoter Tony Cochrane told Nine's Today Show.

"It took a lot of work to get him over the line and one of the key things is part of the proceeds of this show is to raise money for Head and Neck Cancer Australia."
