A massive five-alarm fire triggered by a ruptured gas line destroyed an apartment building in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas on Thursday, May 28, 2026, leaving three people dead and at least four others injured.
Dallas Fire-Rescue officials stated that a construction crew accidentally damaged a utility line prior to the blast.

First responders were already en route to investigate the reported gas leak when the building exploded around 1:15 p.
m. near East 9th Street and North Patton Avenue.
Victims and Response
The Dallas County Democratic Party announced that Sylvia Collins, a local Precinct Chair who resided in the building, remained unaccounted for following the incident.
Emergency crews upgraded the response to five alarms, deploying more than 100 firefighters to battle the flames that completely engulfed the complex and blew out windows in neighboring structures.
Department spokespersons confirmed that the fatalities included two women and one child.
Hospital officials treated four injured individuals, one of whom remained in critical but stable condition, while another victim sought medical attention independently for minor injuries.

“This was enormous,” said Jason Evans, a spokesman for the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department.
He noted that emergency personnel had manually searched approximately 35 to 40 percent of the debris by Thursday night, though heavy machinery would be required to excavate the remaining sections.
“We just have to keep searching,” said Evans, who also indicated that recovery operations would continue through the night.
Displaced residents are being relocated to temporary hotel accommodations.
