Transit services between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Union Station resumed Monday afternoon after a severe technical malfunction halted UP Express trains and caused widespread delays.
The disruption began during the morning commute when a failed signaling system component caused an unstaffed train to move autonomously and block a primary track west of Union Station.

Metrolinx suspended services immediately to address the safety hazard, impacting thousands of passengers during peak travel hours.
The breakdown also triggered significant delays and cancellations on the Kitchener GO and Barrie GO lines.
To bridge the service gap, transit officials deployed GO Express buses to ferry passengers between the airport and downtown.

Metrolinx maintenance crews spent several hours identifying the signaling fault, deactivating the malfunctioning train, and resetting the system under strict safety protocols before clearing the line for normal operations.
Service Restoration and Safety Measures
“We appreciate our customers’ patience during this disruption and thank the TTC for their support in providing alternate travel options,” Metrolinx officials said in a statement.
The technical breakdown caused crowded buses and extended wait times across Ontario’s transit network.
