The Department for Education has rejected Whitby School's application to convert to academy status with the Wonder Learning Partnership, citing concerns over geographical coherence.

Local education officials announced they are now prioritizing sustained improvement and positive outcomes for students as the school remains under local authority maintenance.

The decision follows the controversial 2024 amalgamation of Eskdale School and Caedmon College Whitby, which faced significant local opposition before approval by North Yorkshire Council.

A recent meeting in Whitby, attended by over 60 parents, pupils, and local leaders, highlighted widespread disappointment, with attendees expressing feelings of being sent back to square one.

During a full meeting of North Yorkshire Council on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, concerns were raised regarding the future trajectory and support network for the academic institution.

Cllr Neil Swannick, representative for the Whitby Streonshalh division, stated that the chair of the board of governors of Whitby School had recently informed parents, carers, and students that the DfE did not support the application.

Swannick requested information on alternative strategies and additional resources for school leaders following the unexpected decision.

He asked what the 'plan B' is, bearing in mind the difficult period of amalgamation of two secondary schools in Whitby, and what additional support and resources will be made available to the school governors and leadership.

Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, the executive member for education, responded by outlining the existing comprehensive local authority support framework available to maintained schools.

Wilkinson noted that the DfE did not support the academy conversion due to reasons of geographical coherence.

She explained that the school improvement team is aligning its monitoring and challenge resources with the current priorities of the school.

As a maintained school, Whitby School benefits from a comprehensive programme of school improvement support, including monitoring and challenge provided by the local authority team, in addition to support through partnership organisations.

The executive member emphasized that the shared focus remains on securing sustained improvement and positive outcomes for pupils through arrangements that are coherent, proportionate, and sustainable.

Wilkinson concluded by praising the educational staff and confirming an upcoming personal visit to the facility.

She thanked the head teacher, governors, and staff for the sterling work they are doing as champions for Whitby and for the pupils of the school.
