German filmmaker Werner Herzog has turned down his invitation to the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, following the decision to place his new film "Bucking Fastard" in the official selection but outside the main competition category.

The rejection, reported by Variety on May 9, 2026, stems from Herzog's view that the non-competition placement fails to match the ambitions of the project.

The director, who has won four awards at Cannes over his five-decade career, considered the slot an unacceptable step backward for his artistic legacy.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled for May 12–23, 2026, and features a competitive lineup dominated by international directors including Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Asghar Farhadi, Paweł Pawlikowski, Na Hong-jin, Cristian Mungiu, and Ira Sachs.

"Bucking Fastard" is Herzog's latest English-language narrative feature, based on the true 1980s story of English twin sisters Freda and Greta Chaplin, who became known for a legal battle involving a shared romantic relationship with the same man.

The film stars real-life sisters Kate Mara and Rooney Mara appearing together on screen for the first time, alongside Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson.

The narrative focuses on psychological depth and synchronized human behavior.

Artistic Independence

Herzog has maintained a history of complete artistic independence since establishing his own production company in 1963.

He remains the only director to have shot feature films on all seven continents, routinely prioritizing his creative vision over commercial or institutional endorsements.

Industry analysis from World of Reel and Awards Radar suggests the withdrawal highlights ongoing tensions regarding how major festivals rank prestige films.

By rejecting the secondary slot, Herzog keeps alternative premiere pathways open for the film at events like the Venice, Berlin, or Toronto festivals.

The future distribution plan for "Bucking Fastard" remains unconfirmed as of late May 2026.

The production team can still pursue a world premiere at a competing international festival, choose an independent theatrical release, or utilize alternative digital distribution platforms.
